Our Story
Morayvia was established in May 2011, following the pioneering efforts of the Nimrod Heritage Group, which sought to preserve the last operational Nimrod aircraft, XV244, stationed at RAF Kinloss. Recognizing the significance of this aircraft as an integral part of Scotland’s rich aviation heritage, Morayvia was officially formed as a private company limited by guarantee (SC404186) on 26th July 2011. The initiative quickly gained traction, drawing interest from aviation enthusiasts, former service personnel, and local community members who recognized the value of preserving this historic aircraft for future generations.
With invaluable support from Johnston Carmichael, Elgin, Morayvia obtained charitable status (SC042895) in January 2012. This milestone provided access to crucial funding and resources that would help shape its future. It also enabled the organization to build partnerships with various stakeholders, including government agencies, heritage bodies, and educational institutions. Backed by financial contributions from Project LEADER and Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), Morayvia successfully completed a comprehensive Feasibility Study. The study emphasized the necessity of establishing a dedicated visitor centre to preserve aviation history while offering immersive, hands-on experiences to the public. It also highlighted the potential economic and educational benefits of such a facility, positioning it as a key attraction for tourism and STEM education in the region.
The preferred location for this centre was the former primary school site at Abbeylands, Kinloss. This site was chosen not only for its historical significance but also for its accessibility and potential for expansion. Working closely with Moray Council through the Community Asset Transfer scheme, Morayvia secured ownership of the site in 2018. This acquisition allowed for significant restoration, including extensive upgrades to the school buildings and surrounding grounds. What is STEP?
Morayvia’s Science and Technology Experience Project (STEP) is an ambitious and dynamic initiative designed to bring together multiple disciplines—ranging from aerospace and astronomy to technology and arts-related activities—into a single visitor centre of excellence. Situated in Moray, this project serves not only the northeast of Scotland and the Highlands but also attracts visitors from further afield, making it a significant cultural and educational asset.
